Titanic Bugle

In April 1912, the great ship Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the icy Atlantic, taking with her 1500 souls. Among the lost was PW Fletcher, the bugler, whose job it was to sound the alarm in case of disaster. This blog picks up where PW left off many years ago with notes sounding the alarm about what we humans are doing to this planet, particularly the animals. Many today act as if they believe, as did the Titanic's owners, that even God cannot sink us. I'm not too sure.

Lucy is dead

Sunnyvale's attorney ordered that Lucy be put to death at 5:15 (8:15 EST) this evening. Gov. Schwarzenegeer chose not to got involved in the matter. In what was an act of callous vindictiveness in retaliation for the international campaign to save Lucy, Sunnyvale city attorney David Kahn refused to allow Lucy's guardians to be with her when she was killed by the Humane Society.

Evil exists in this world. It is evident that we the people have little control in stopping it.

Avery was adopted by a friend in 2004 from a Greyhound rescue organization. He spent the first 5 years of his life either in a crate or on the track. But he was one of the few lucky Greyhounds because he got adopted by a caring guardian instead of meeting up with the sad fate that so many other Greyhounds meet up with. Fortunately, the couple who adopted him more than made up Avery's hapless first five years and treated him in a way that all dogs --- all animals --- should be treated, with respect. The only things from Avery's former life that my friends kept for Avery were his gentle spirit and his name.

Avery died on June 7th in the arms of his guardian. This photo of him will remain on this blog as another reminder of why we all must work to end the cruel treatment of animals on this planet, in his case, the exploitation of animals in the racing industry, both Greyhound dogs and thoroughbred horses. It is more than ironic that Avery died on the same day that Big Brown met up with his fate at the Belmont Stakes in New York.

Persons of the Month

Congratulations to Nadine Isvarin and John Dorment for being named Person(s) of the Month. The two of them tirelessly fought the Washington DC bureaucracy to save their beloved dog Bubba from a wrongful death, and in doing so raised the bar of the bond between man and dog. At enormous cost to themselves, they refused to let a vindictive dog owner and a broken government bureaucary break that bond.
